A Hawaii bus rolled backward off a highway, injuring 22 people; the driver was unharmed but removed from duty.
A County of Hawaii Hele-On bus rolled backward off Mamalahoa Highway near Laupahoehoe early Tuesday morning, landing on its side after leaving a scenic lookout.
The crash, reported at 4:56 a.m. at the 25.5 mile marker, left 22 people hospitalized with injuries ranging from minor to moderate, including a minor hand laceration to an elderly passenger.
The 66-year-old driver, who was checking seating after parking the bus, was not injured but has been removed from duty.
All victims were treated at the scene and transported to Hilo Benioff Medical Center.
Highway 19 was closed temporarily.
The incident is under investigation by Hamakua patrol officers.
