Greek workers strike over proposed 13-hour workdays with 40% overtime pay.
On October 1, 2025, thousands of Greek workers staged a 24-hour general strike, disrupting transport, schools, hospitals, and public services, in protest against proposed labor reforms that would allow a 13-hour workday under exceptional circumstances with 40% overtime pay.
The measure, not yet submitted to parliament, would apply only with employee consent and for up to 37 days a year.
Unions including GSEE and ADEDY oppose the change, warning it threatens worker health, safety, and work-life balance, while the pro-communist PAME called it "modern slavery."
The government argues the reform offers flexibility, particularly for young people with multiple jobs, despite ongoing concerns over low wages—such as the 880 euro minimum—and the high cost of living.
Greece’s average workweek of 39.8 hours already exceeds the EU average.
