Former Congo President Joseph Kabila sentenced to death in absentia for treason and war crimes linked to M23 rebellion.
A military court in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has sentenced former President Joseph Kabila to death in absentia on charges including treason, crimes against humanity, murder, rape, and conspiracy, accusing him of collaborating with the M23 rebel group and Rwanda during its 2025 offensive in eastern Congo.
The trial, held in Kinshasa, proceeded without Kabila, who has not been seen since appearing in Goma in April.
The government stripped him of immunity in May, a move he called authoritarian.
The verdict reflects escalating political tensions amid ongoing conflict, with M23 rebels controlling key areas and displacing millions.
Kabila’s party denounces the trial as politically motivated.
