Dyon Smart, 35, of Brampton, was sentenced to life in prison for the 2018 attempted murder of a 5-year-old boy, whom he abducted and brutally assaulted in a wooded area after being asked to leave the child’s mother’s home.
The attack, which included stomping on the boy’s head and torso and choking him with a rope, left the child with lasting physical and cognitive impairments despite surviving.
The boy, who cried for his mother during the assault, required treatment from 17 specialists and relearned basic skills.
Smart, a known violent offender with a history of drug use and prior criminal charges, violated bail conditions by staying in the mother’s home and was found to have targeted the child in retaliation.
The court acknowledged the profound and lasting trauma on the family, including the mother losing custody and the father quitting his job to care for the child.
