Phillip Pietras, a former funeral director in Vernon, Connecticut, faces new charges for allegedly stealing pre-paid funeral funds from over 100 clients between 2014 and 2024, using the money for gambling, vacations, and personal expenses.
Arrested in September 2025, he is charged with 20 counts of larceny in the second degree and 60 counts of intent to defraud funeral contracts, with his bail reduced to $200,000.
Authorities found evidence of funds spent at casinos including Mohegan Sun and MGM Springfield, and discovered nearly $200,000 in unescrowed payments.
The State’s Board of Embalmers revoked his license in July.
Additional investigations are ongoing in East Windsor, Coventry, and Tolland.
