China's Tianwen-2 probe, 43 million km from Earth, captured a self-image with Earth in the background on October 1, 2025, as it heads to asteroid 2016HO3 for sample return.
China’s Tianwen-2 probe, launched May 29, 2025, captured a new image of itself with Earth in the background on October 1, 2025, according to CNSA.
Taken by a camera on its robotic arm, the photo shows the probe’s return capsule and Chinese flag against a distant blue Earth.
At 43 million kilometers from Earth, the probe is en route to asteroid 2016HO3, where it will collect samples as part of China’s first asteroid sample-return mission.
It has completed in-orbit tests, with all systems functioning normally, and is now gathering space environment data.
The decade-long mission will also study main-belt comet 311P beyond Mars.
