Bricen Rivers, accused of killing Southern Miss student Lauren Johansen in July 2024, has had his trial delayed to March 3, 2026, in Forrest County, Mississippi, due to a request for a mental health evaluation.
Rivers, who pleaded not guilty to capital murder, vehicle theft, and tampering with evidence, is alleged to have beaten Johansen to death, stolen her car, and fled to Harrison County where her body was found.
Authorities say his brother confessed Rivers’ involvement, and Rivers had prior charges related to drug trafficking, kidnapping, and stalking, with bonds revoked in those cases.
He remains jailed.
A separate lawsuit has been filed over a prior bond oversight that may have allowed Rivers to evade supervision.
