Alabama social worker Giovanna Hernandez-Martinez, detained by ICE in August 2025 after a traffic stop in Leeds, has self-deported to Mexico City, citing fear of a deportation bar.
A graduate of Jacksonville State University and founder of the immigrant support program “Escalera,” she had no criminal record and received over 20,000 signatures on a petition calling for her release.
Now in Mexico with family, she expressed gratitude for public support but said she grieves leaving the life she built in the U.S. since arriving at age 7.
Her family is exploring legal options for her return.
