Vietnam jails 16 SJC ex-employees for gold theft and fraud ahead of market liberalization.
A Vietnamese court sentenced 16 former Saigon Jewelry Company (SJC) employees, including former CEO Le Thuy Hang, to prison terms from two to 25 years over a corruption case involving millions in losses and hundreds of kilograms of gold.
Hang received the maximum 25-year sentence for embezzling $2.7 million and causing $4 million in state losses by inflating processing losses, diverting gold, falsifying records, and illegally producing and selling gold bars and rings.
The defendants also smuggled about 34 kilograms using fake customer lists.
The court ordered them to repay 640 kilograms of gold.
The case exposes flaws in Vietnam’s gold system as the government prepares to end SJC’s monopoly on gold production starting October 10, allowing commercial banks and enterprises to enter the market.
