U.S. senators urge NHTSA to investigate Tesla’s FSD over repeated failure to detect trains, citing safety risks and misleading marketing.
U.S.
Senators Ed Markey and Richard Blumenthal have urged the NHTSA to investigate Tesla’s Full Self-Driving system over repeated failures to detect railroad crossings, citing safety risks and near-collisions.
The call follows an NBC News investigation and comes after NHTSA opened a probe in October 2024 into about 2.4 million Tesla vehicles with FSD, prompted by four crashes under poor visibility.
The senators argue the system’s inability to reliably respond to trains, despite requiring driver supervision, poses serious dangers and that Tesla’s marketing misleads consumers.
The NHTSA has acknowledged concerns but has not yet taken formal action.
