The UN Security Council votes on expanding Haiti’s security mission to 5,500 troops to fight gang violence amid global concerns.
The UN Security Council is set to vote on expanding Haiti’s Multinational Security Support Mission, currently at 1,000 personnel, into a larger force of up to 5,500 with military capabilities and a new UN support office.
The move, backed by the U.S. and Panama, aims to combat gang violence that controls much of Port-au-Prince, displacing over a million people and causing thousands of deaths.
The current mission, led by Kenya, operates at only 40% capacity due to funding shortfalls.
The resolution requires nine votes in favor and no veto from permanent members.
While international leaders warn of escalating regional instability, China and Russia remain cautious, citing the need for political reforms before deeper military involvement.
