TSA investigated for adding Americans to watchlists over Jan. 6 or mask refusal, using non-security criteria.
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is under investigation for placing dozens of Americans on watchlists and no-fly lists during the Biden administration based on involvement in the January 6 Capitol riot or refusal to wear masks during the pandemic.
An internal DHS probe found the TSA used non-security criteria, including social media and academic databases, to target individuals who posed no aviation threat, with some wrongly added despite no presence at the Capitol.
The initiative, dubbed "Operation Freedom to Breathe," led to at least 19 people on watchlists, over half for mask non-compliance, and 280 Capitol riot-related individuals flagged, five of whom were denied flights.
While most were removed by mid-2021, some remained on lists after charges were dropped.
DHS Secretary Kristi Noem accused TSA leadership of abusing power, referring the matter to the Justice Department and Congress.
The TSA maintains its actions were lawful, but the controversy has raised concerns about civil liberties and the use of national security tools for political dissent.
