Türkiye has regained 83 Roman-era coins from the U.S., officials confirmed in Ankara.
The coins, minted in Anatolia between the 3rd and 4th centuries under emperors Maximian, Constantine I, Constantine II, and Arcadius, were seized in 2015 and returned under a 2021 bilateral agreement to combat antiquities trafficking.
Deputy Culture and Tourism Minister Gökhan Yazgı received the artifacts from U.S. Chargé d’Affaires Brian Stimmler, calling the repatriation swift and transparent.
The return highlights growing U.S.-Turkey cooperation in cultural preservation, part of Türkiye’s broader effort since 2002 to recover over 13,000 smuggled artifacts.
