TotalEnergies may reroute Russian LNG to Turkey and India if the EU bans imports by 2027, but sanctions could halt shipments.
TotalEnergies CEO Patrick Pouyanné said the company could redirect Russian LNG from Europe to Turkey and India if the EU enacts its planned ban on Russian LNG imports by January 1, 2027.
The move would follow the EU’s 19th sanctions package, pending unanimous approval, which aims to accelerate the phaseout of Russian energy imports.
TotalEnergies, which holds a 20% stake in the unsanctioned Yamal LNG project, currently sends 2 million tons annually to Europe and 2 million to Asia.
While the company could reroute shipments if the EU bans imports, sanctions on the Yamal project itself would force it to halt deliveries.
A Greenpeace study revealed EU firms paid $9.5 billion in Russian taxes from LNG imports between 2022 and 2024, with France’s TotalEnergies the top buyer.
