Thames Water auto-enrolls 33,000 low-income London households in a 50% bill reduction program.
Thames Water has launched a new program to automatically enroll low-income households in 17 London boroughs into its WaterHelp social tariff, cutting their water bills by 50% without requiring applications.
Using data from councils and the Policy in Practice platform, the utility identifies households where water costs exceed 5% of net income, ensuring support reaches those in financial hardship.
Around 33,000 households are expected to benefit, saving over £300 each annually—more than £10 million total.
The initiative, expanding from a successful pilot, also flags eligibility for additional aid like the WaterSure tariff or up to £700 in emergency support, regardless of arrears.
The move comes amid Thames Water’s financial struggles, including a £1.65 billion annual loss and £16.8 billion in debt, as a creditor-led £20.5 billion investment plan aims to stabilize the company and reduce pollution and leaks.
