Russell Laffitte, a former South Carolina banker, was sentenced to five years in federal prison on September 29, 2025, for his role in a fraud scheme tied to disgraced attorney Alex Murdaugh.
Laffitte, 54, pleaded guilty to conspiracy, bank fraud, wire fraud, and misapplication of bank funds, admitting he helped divert nearly $2 million in client settlement funds to cover Murdaugh’s debts.
The sentence, handed down by U.S. District Judge Richard Gergel, includes three years of supervised release, a $20,000 fine, and a $600 special assessment.
Laffitte must also pay $3.5 million in restitution.
His conviction follows a prior 2022 sentence overturned on appeal due to judicial errors.
The case is part of a broader investigation into Murdaugh’s financial crimes.
