South Africa’s president launched an inquiry into suspended DPP Andrew Chauke over allegations of misconduct and improper prosecutions.
President Cyril Ramaphosa has launched an inquiry into the fitness of South Africa’s suspended Director of Public Prosecutions, Advocate Andrew Chauke, following serious allegations about his conduct and propriety.
Chauke, appointed in 2011, was suspended on full pay in July 2025 amid claims of improper prosecutions, shielding politically connected individuals, and bypassing authority.
The inquiry, chaired by retired Justice Bess Nkabinde, will examine these allegations, including cases involving former police officials and high-profile figures, and operate under constitutional and legal standards.
It will determine its own procedures and timeline, with findings to be reported to the president.
Civil society groups have welcomed the move, calling it essential to restore public trust in the National Prosecuting Authority.
