Saskatchewan apologized and pledged $40.2M in restitution to survivors of Île-à-la-Crosse residential school.
The Saskatchewan government issued a formal apology to former students of the Île-à-la-Crosse residential school, acknowledging its role in the institution’s operation from the 1800s until the 1970s and the resulting abuse, cultural suppression, and trauma.
As part of a settlement, the province agreed to provide $40.2 million in restitution, with a third-party claims process to handle individual compensation in a trauma-informed way.
This follows a federal agreement for up to $27 million in compensation and $10 million for healing initiatives.
Survivors welcomed the move as a significant step toward reconciliation, though many have passed away.
The settlement is expected to be approved by the Court of King’s Bench early next year.
