A late August 2025 Leger poll for the Association for Canadian Studies found that 38% of Canadians believe the country belongs “first and foremost” to Indigenous Peoples, with 43% disagreeing and 19% unsure.
The survey of 1,627 people revealed significant divides by age, region, and background, with younger Canadians, immigrants, and Ontarians more likely to hold this view, while older Canadians and those in Quebec, BC, and the Prairies were less likely.
Among Indigenous respondents, 72% said Canada belongs to them first, compared to 37% of non-Indigenous people.
The findings reflect ongoing national debates over identity, colonial history, and reconciliation, particularly as Canada observes the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
