A Hokitika hunter, Alesha Tomasi, has trained her goat Gavin to accompany her on West Coast hunting trips, making him the first goat in New Zealand to receive a Department of Conservation pack goat permit.
Gavin, now two years old, carries 20 to 30 kilograms of gear, helps transport supplies and meat, and acts as a “Judas goat” to lure wild animals.
He was once an escape artist who raided gardens but is now confined by a deer fence.
Tomasi has also begun training Gavin’s three-month-old nephew, Kevin, for future hunts.
The pair, known as “double-trouble,” are playful and mischievous outside of hunting, drawing curiosity and admiration from locals.
