A new report warns that weak primary healthcare in Latin America and the Caribbean could cause up to 165,000 preventable deaths and $37 billion in economic losses if services decline by 25–50% during crises.
Speaking at PAHO’s 62nd Directing Council, Jamaica’s Health Minister Christopher Tufton projected a 600,000 health worker shortfall by 2030, driven by migration and shortages of nurses and specialists.
The report, launched Sept. 29, 2025, calls for resilient, equitable primary care through multi-professional teams, community involvement, cross-sector collaboration, and sustainable financing.
It highlights the region’s vulnerability during the pandemic and climate disasters, urging urgent action to strengthen health systems.
