Nearly 1.96 million UK GHICs and EHICs expire in 2025, risking travelers’ access to free emergency care in Europe unless renewed.
Nearly 1.96 million UK Global Health Insurance Cards (GHICs) and European Health Insurance Cards (EHICs) are set to expire in 2025, potentially leaving travelers without access to free or reduced-cost emergency healthcare in Europe.
The GHIC, which replaced the EHIC, remains valid for emergency care in EU countries and Switzerland if current and properly renewed.
The NHS has spent over £813 million since 2016 on medical treatment for UK travelers abroad.
Renewing a GHIC is free and can be done online up to nine months before expiry.
Travelers must check their card’s expiry date—located in the bottom right corner—and ensure they also have comprehensive travel insurance, as GHICs and EHICs do not cover private care, cruises, or winter sports emergencies.
Authorities stress that a valid card is essential but not sufficient on its own.
