The Melbourne Savage Club ended its women’s lunch trial early due to internal opposition, reverting to its male-only dining policy.
The Melbourne Savage Club has ended its six-month trial allowing women to dine as lunch guests, concluding the initiative early after a member vote.
The trial, launched in June to address declining attendance, permitted female guests of members to join lunch on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
Internal opposition, including concerns about the club’s traditional atmosphere, led to a non-binding vote, resulting in the decision to revert to its long-standing policy of restricting women to dinner events and select functions.
The club’s general manager confirmed the trial’s end and said future options for mixed dining would be considered based on member feedback, though no immediate changes are planned.
Founded in 1894, the private men’s club remains exclusive, with prior surveys showing strong resistance to admitting women as members.
