Kenosha bans backyard leaf burning; residents can compost yard waste for free using approved bags.
Burning leaves in backyards is banned in Kenosha effective immediately, with only clean, dry firewood allowed for recreational fires.
Residents are urged to join the city’s fall curbside compostables program, running from October 6 to November 29, 2025.
Yard waste must be in approved biodegradable bags—Bag To Nature, BioBag, or Ecoguard—weighing no more than 40 pounds, and placed at the curb after 6:30 p.m. the night before pickup and before 6 a.m. on collection day.
Collected material is turned into free compost.
$2 coupons per box of bags (up to four per visit) are available at city offices and participating retailers to offset costs.
