Irish authorities stopped 25 French nationals from illegally harvesting 1,000 oysters in a protected Irish bay, seizing vehicles and planning prosecution.
In September 2025, Inland Fisheries Ireland intercepted a group of 25 French nationals illegally harvesting over 1,000 wild oysters in Kenmare Bay, a protected conservation zone in County Kerry.
Officers recovered the oysters from two vehicles and two additional bags, many below the legal size of 76mm, and returned them to the shore.
Two vehicles were seized, and a prosecution is being prepared under Ireland’s Fisheries Act.
IFI emphasized the action prevented environmental harm and urged the public to report illegal fishing via a 24/7 hotline.
