India's telecom regulator recommends 5-year spectrum licenses for critical services to stay current with global tech shifts.
India’s telecom regulator TRAI has recommended a five-year spectrum validity for Public Mobile Radio Trunking Service (PMRTS), revising its earlier 2018 proposal for 20-year assignments.
The change reflects rapid global shifts toward broadband-based critical communications, such as FirstNet in the U.S. and Safe-Net in South Korea, and aims to prevent locking India into outdated narrowband technology.
TRAI also supports a pro-rata payment model and 1% spectrum usage charges based on adjusted gross revenue.
The updated stance, issued after reviewing feedback from the Department of Telecommunications, emphasizes flexibility for future tech upgrades while ensuring stable operations for essential services like public safety, transport, and utilities.
El regulador de telecomunicaciones de la India recomienda licencias de espectro por 5 años para servicios críticos para mantenerse al día con los cambios tecnológicos globales.
