Indian researchers created a sustainable bamboo fishing trap, patented in the UK, to support local fishing communities.
Researchers from Nagaland University, led by Professors Bendang Ao and Pukhrambam Rajesh Singh, have developed and patented the eco-friendly 'BR Fishing Trap,' made from bamboo and plastic thread.
Designed for use in hill streams and fish farms, it features four 6-inch entrances, one removable for cleaning and fish release.
The lightweight, durable trap, measuring 22×8 inches, emerged from studies of fish and plankton in the Milak and Dikhu rivers and was created with local bamboo weavers.
Patented in the UK in October 2024, the innovation offers a low-cost, sustainable alternative to commercial gear, supporting local livelihoods and community-driven development.
