India condemns vandalism of Gandhi statue in London, calling it a disgrace to nonviolence.
The Indian High Commission in London condemned the vandalism of Mahatma Gandhi’s statue in Tavistock Square, calling it a "shameful" act that attacks the principle of nonviolence, especially as it occurred just days before the International Day of Nonviolence.
The commission expressed deep concern, raised the matter urgently with local authorities, and confirmed a team is on-site working to restore the statue.
The incident follows earlier tensions during External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar’s visit in March, when pro-Khalistani protesters disrupted events, prompting India to urge the UK to uphold its diplomatic responsibilities.
The statue, unveiled in 1968, has long symbolized peace and Gandhi’s legacy.
