A former petrol station in Lake Illawarra will become a childcare center for 109 young children, with public comments due by October 10, 2025.
A former Lake Illawarra petrol station, vacant for nearly 20 years, is proposed to become a two-storey childcare centre for 109 children aged zero to five, with plans submitted to Shellharbour City Council.
The site, remediated after contamination from underground tanks, has residual groundwater pollution in the north, but a health assessment confirms no risk to humans if basements are avoided.
The centre will include indoor and outdoor play areas, 27 parking spaces via a new King Street driveway, and six trees replaced with improved landscaping.
It aims to support holistic child development through research-based programs.
Public comment is open until October 10, 2025.
