Ecuador's president's convoy attacked during protests over diesel subsidy cuts, sparking nationwide unrest and a government probe.
A convoy carrying Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa and foreign diplomats was attacked in Imbabura province on Sunday during the eighth day of protests over the government’s decision to end diesel subsidies, sparking unrest nationwide.
Officials reported around 350 individuals ambushed the convoy with fireworks, Molotov cocktails, and rocks, prompting a defense by about 50 soldiers; no injuries were confirmed.
Italy’s embassy labeled the attack a “terrorist act.” The government blamed infiltrating “terrorist groups,” while the Indigenous-led CONAIE denied involvement, claiming a protester was killed by security forces and accusing the government of repression.
A separate incident reportedly killed at least one person and led to the kidnapping of 17 military personnel.
The Ecuadorian Prosecutor’s Office announced an investigation using international protocols to ensure objectivity.
