The DOJ sued Minnesota over immigration policies it says hinder federal enforcement and threaten public safety.
The U.S. Department of Justice has sued Minnesota, including Minneapolis, St. Paul, and Hennepin County, over immigration policies it says violate federal law by limiting cooperation with federal immigration authorities.
The lawsuit, part of a broader effort by the Trump administration, alleges these policies endanger public safety by allowing individuals, including those with criminal records, to avoid deportation.
Attorney General Pamela Bondi claimed the state’s actions obstruct federal enforcement, while Minnesota officials, including Attorney General Keith Ellison, dismissed the suit as politically motivated.
The legal action follows similar moves against other sanctuary jurisdictions and comes after a federal judge blocked a prior attempt to cut funding to sanctuary cities.
Officials from Minnesota’s state and local governments had not responded to requests for comment at the time of reporting.
