Colombia launches its first homegrown combat rifle, ending reliance on Israeli and U.S. weapons amid shifting foreign policy.
Colombia has unveiled its first domestically produced combat rifle, replacing Israeli-supplied Galil rifles previously assembled in the country.
The new weapon, developed by state-owned Indumil, is lighter, cheaper, and made from steel and polymer, weighing 15 to 25 percent less than its predecessor.
The move follows President Gustavo Petro’s 2024 decision to sever diplomatic ties with Israel over its actions in Gaza and a broader effort to reduce reliance on foreign arms, including halting purchases from the U.S. after Colombia was removed from a U.S. anti-drug alliance list.
Indumil plans to produce 400,000 rifles within five years.
While officials frame the initiative as a step toward military self-sufficiency, experts question whether Colombia can achieve full production without major cost or logistical challenges.
