Thailand’s new PM pledges diplomacy and reforms after deadly border clash with Cambodia.
Thailand’s new Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has pledged to resolve the ongoing border dispute with Cambodia through diplomacy, including a planned referendum on revoking the 2000 border agreement after a deadly five-day clash in July killed at least 48 and displaced over 260,000.
He also committed to economic reforms, reducing household debt, lowering energy and transport costs, combating corruption and illegal gambling, improving disaster preparedness, and advancing constitutional changes via public participation.
His government faces a four-month deadline and opposition from the People’s Party, which holds a political agreement to oppose his initiatives.
The conflict, ended by a Malaysian-brokered ceasefire, marks the worst fighting between the nations in over a decade.
