Sri Lanka's Western Province, especially Colombo and its suburbs, has the highest rate of schoolchildren with drug addiction, according to the National Dangerous Drugs Control Board.
Low-income communities are most affected, with high-risk areas also in Kandy, Gampaha, and other districts.
Contributing factors include peer pressure, weak school prevention programs, family neglect, poverty, and easy drug access.
The NDDCB is expanding screening, counseling, and awareness efforts, with 206 children arrested for drug offenses between January and August and over 15,600 school programs conducted.
