A New Zealander convicted of a fatal drunk driving crash in October 2024 will serve prison time, with his appeal for home detention denied.
A 20-year-old man from New Zealand’s Bay of Plenty, Tupaea Mika, will remain in prison after being convicted of causing a fatal crash while driving under the influence of alcohol in October 2024.
The incident on State Highway 2 near Whakātane killed a woman and injured her daughter.
Mika, who had a blood alcohol level significantly above the legal limit and a prior drink-driving conviction, was sentenced to prison with a mandatory term for causing death while impaired.
His appeal for home detention was rejected by the High Court, which cited his history of repeat offenses.
The case reinforces New Zealand’s strict stance on impaired driving, regardless of remorse or personal character.
He is expected to be released in March 2026.
