New York redirected 63 million pounds of surplus food to fight hunger and reduce emissions, meeting a major milestone.
New York State has redirected over 63 million pounds of surplus food from landfills to food banks and meal programs, a major milestone achieved during Hunger Action Month.
The effort, supported by $10.8 million in state grants since 2018 and additional funding for emergency food providers, combats food insecurity and reduces greenhouse gas emissions.
The program, part of the state’s Food Donation and Food Scraps Recycling Law, requires large food generators to donate edible surplus and recycle scraps starting in 2027.
Officials say it has helped more than 3 million residents access meals and serves as a model for addressing hunger and climate change.
