A new trial in northern England lets passengers pay for train tickets using a smartphone app that tracks their journey via GPS, automatically charging the lowest fare for the day.
Starting September 29, the service runs on Northern routes between Harrogate and Leeds, with plans to expand to Sheffield and Doncaster, and Sheffield and Barnsley.
Users tap the app to board, and a barcode can be scanned by inspectors or at barriers.
Participants receive £15 in free credit.
The initiative, backed by the Department for Transport and regional leaders, aims to simplify ticketing, improve access, and modernize rail travel.
A similar trial began earlier in September on East Midlands Railway.
