A new blood test model called CORE, developed by Karolinska Institutet and published in The BMJ on September 29, 2025, can predict severe liver disease—such as cirrhosis or liver cancer—up to 10 years in advance using routine blood tests for age, sex, and three liver enzymes (AST, ALT, GGT).
Tested on over 480,000 Stockholm residents with up to 30 years of follow-up, it correctly identified 88% of future cases, outperforming the FIB-4 method.
The tool, available as a web-based calculator, shows promise for use in primary care and has been validated in Finland and the UK, though further study is needed in high-risk groups like those with diabetes or obesity.
