A $245M defense contract expands Montana’s Thompson Falls smelter, boosting antimony production 400% to cut U.S. reliance on China.
A $245 million Department of Defense contract is funding a major expansion at Montana’s Thompson Falls smelter, the only U.S. facility of its kind, boosting antimony production capacity by 400% to over 500 tons monthly.
The project, expected to create 25 high-wage jobs and increase local revenue from $2.5 million to $16 million monthly, aims to reduce U.S. reliance on China, which controls 85% of global antimony supply.
The smelter will produce up to 15 million pounds of antimony oxide or 5 million pounds of metal annually, supporting national defense, batteries, and electronics.
