India finances Bhutan’s 600 MW Kholongchhu hydropower project, boosting clean energy ties.
Bhutan’s Kholongchhu Hydropower Project, a 600 MW initiative by a joint venture of Druk Green Power and Tata Power, secured a Rs 4,829 crore loan from India’s Power Finance Corporation, marking PFC’s first cross-border financing in Bhutan.
Construction began January 1, 2025, with completion expected by 2029–2030.
The project will generate 2,524 million units annually, boosting Bhutan’s winter power supply and enabling summer exports to India via a new 145 km transmission line.
A separate Rs 950 crore credit facility supports the project.
The collaboration advances India-Bhutan clean energy ties and Bhutan’s goal to expand hydropower to 15,000 MW and solar to 5,000 MW within a decade.
