Hudson’s Bay seeks court approval to auction its 1670 royal charter on Oct. 15, 2025, with a $15M minimum bid and donation to a Canadian public institution.
Hudson’s Bay is seeking court approval to auction its 1670 royal charter on October 15, 2025, requiring a minimum $15 million bid and a commitment to donate it permanently to a Canadian public institution or museum, with shared access for Indigenous groups and other organizations.
The auction was reinstated after the company withdrew a prior $12.5 million deal with the Weston family when David Thomson’s holding company pledged at least $15 million and proposed donating the charter to the Archives of Manitoba.
A court hearing on September 29, 2025, will determine if the auction proceeds.
