A fire at a New York metal recycling plant caused thick smoke and air concerns but no injuries.
A major fire erupted Sunday morning at the Metalico metal recycling facility in DeWitt, New York, around 6:30 a.m., producing thick black smoke and a strong odor described as similar to burnt plastic.
Firefighters from multiple departments, including DeWitt, East Syracuse, Fayetteville, and Manlius, responded, with the Air National Guard on standby.
The blaze, initially mistaken for a brush fire, was still burning by midday, prompting lane closures on NY 635 and raising air quality concerns.
No injuries have been reported, and the cause remains under investigation.
