Using sunbeds before 35 increases melanoma risk by 75%, with no safe level of use, warns Ireland’s HSE.
The Health Service Executive (HSE) warns that using sunbeds before age 35 raises melanoma skin cancer risk by 75%, stating there is no safe level of use.
Sunbeds emit UV radiation up to five times stronger than Australia’s midday sun, damaging skin cell DNA and increasing cancer and aging risks like wrinkles and brown spots.
Despite myths, they don’t prevent sunburn, treat skin conditions, or provide Vitamin D. Nearly 20% of Irish people have used sunbeds, with 3% doing so weekly.
The HSE urges the public to avoid them entirely and practice sun safety.
