The Sri Lankan Navy has arrested 12 Indian fishermen from Karaikal, Puducherry, near Kankesanthurai in the Bay of Bengal, accusing them of crossing the international maritime boundary while fishing.
The men, from several villages in the region, were taken to a naval camp for questioning and their boat seized.
The incident has increased tensions within the local fishing community.
This follows a similar arrest earlier in September involving 12 fishermen from Tamil Nadu’s Ramanathapuram district, who were detained, fined, and released after paying a penalty.
The earlier group was held in Colombo’s Welikada Prison and later the Colombo Detention Camp before being repatriated.
