A prized 2018 wooden sculpture, Geyser, was stolen, vandalized, and recovered from a garden in Rotorua, New Zealand.
A 2018 award-winning wooden sculpture, Geyser, by Northland artist Susan Dinkelacker, was stolen from Rotorua’s Sulphur Lake Sculpture Trail, vandalized with lipstick and hair dye, and found dumped in a resident’s garden.
The tōtara wood piece, depicting a geyser as a joyful woman and winner of the symposium’s People’s Choice award, was valued at $8,000 and deeply cherished.
Artist Dinkelacker called the damage irreversible, as restoration would ruin its natural weathered finish.
The sculpture was later recovered after being mistakenly collected during a trail refresh, with no police report filed.
Rotorua Lakes Council expressed disappointment, noting a history of public art vandalism in the region.
Dinkelacker hopes the work is remembered for its original spirit rather than its destruction.
