The National Outdoor Leadership School has revised its application to expand sea kayaking in British Columbia’s coastal waters, removing campsites on Vancouver Island’s west coast amid public and Indigenous concerns.
Originally seeking access to 77 sites for a May to August 2026 expedition, the U.S. group now focuses on core areas on the island’s central and northeast coasts, using sites for up to 20 nights primarily for emergencies.
The change follows backlash over consultation practices and broader political tensions, with the school reaffirming its commitment to low-impact camping and collaboration with B.C.
agencies and First Nations.
The Crown land management process requires site-specific approvals, and the public comment period remains open until October 5.
