He served in multiple leadership roles including mayor pro tem and City Council chair, becoming the only Memphis official elected to all three branches of city government and the longest-serving African American on the council.
A pioneer as one of the first Black journalists at WMC-TV 5, Lowery dedicated over 30 years to public service and community advocacy.
Known for his commitment to unity and mentorship, he co-hosted an annual interfaith prayer breakfast with his son.
His family has requested privacy, asking the public to honor his legacy through service and support for LeMoyne-Owen College.
