Mukhi, India’s first cheetah born in the country to reach adulthood, marks a milestone in India’s cheetah reintroduction program.
On September 28, 2025, Mukhi, a female cheetah born in India to a Namibian mother at Kuno National Park, became the first India-born cheetah to reach adulthood, marking a key milestone in India’s cheetah reintroduction program.
Launched in 2022 with cheetahs from Namibia and reinforced in 2023 with animals from South Africa, the project has resulted in 26 cubs born in India, with 16 surviving.
Despite 19 cheetah deaths, including 10 cubs, the cub survival rate in Kuno exceeds 61%, surpassing the global average.
Officials consider the effort a success, noting the cheetahs have adapted well and are breeding.
India is negotiating to bring in 8–10 more cheetahs from African nations by December 2025 to boost genetic diversity.
