Malta’s new Sicily interconnector, 65% complete, will double energy capacity, cut emissions, and boost renewables by 2026.
Malta’s second interconnector with Sicily is progressing, with 65% of land cable manufacturing complete and trenching underway in Ragusa.
The €300 million project, partly funded by EU money, will link Sicily to Malta’s Magħtab terminal via a 122-kilometer cable, doubling interconnection capacity and supplying nearly one-third of Malta’s peak summer demand.
Expected completion by late 2026, it will support renewable energy integration, reduce CO2 emissions by 13.5 million tonnes, and deliver €712 million in economic benefits.
Despite past delays, the project enhances energy security and supports Malta’s 2050 carbon neutrality goal.
