India’s Cold Desert Biosphere Reserve in Himachal Pradesh’s Lahaul and Spiti district has been added to UNESCO’s global network of biosphere reserves, bringing India’s total to 13.
Spanning 7,770 square kilometers, the reserve features extreme high-altitude landscapes, including glacial valleys, arid plateaus, and alpine lakes, and is home to endangered species like the snow leopard and Himalayan ibex.
The designation, announced during the 5th World Congress of Biosphere Reserves in Hangzhou, China, recognizes efforts to balance conservation with sustainable development, supporting local communities’ traditional livelihoods and ecological stewardship.
